CLEANING AND PREVENTION

Modern dentistry is founded on the principle of prevention. What most people think of as “just a cleaning” when properly done, is actually much more involved. At every hygiene care visit in our office we will evaluate you for signs of oral cancer and other systemic diseases that have early signs that are seen in your mouth. We will check your blood pressure, your heart rate and the oxygen in your blood, just like your physician does. We will measure your gums to confirm that the structures that hold your teeth in your mouth are healthy and then we’ll check your teeth to confirm that they are healthy. If there are any deposits on your teeth that may lead to gum infection or bone loss, our hygienist will remove them in order to prevent bigger problems, and certainly the hygienist will polish your teeth so they look and feel great. We will prescribe a regimen of prevention especially for you to help you avoid big treatment (and big bills) by fixing problems when they are small or preventing them entirely.

What are some preventative measures I can take?

● Brush with an ADA approved fluoride toothpaste

● Use a soft-bristled toothbrush after each meal

● Floss daily before bedtime

● Use an oral rinse after flossing

● Avoid sugary foods, coffee, and tobacco
